Electric Mountain Bike Motor Comparison — Every Platform Explained
Every eMTB in our range uses a mid-drive motor, but which platform it runs makes a real difference to how the bike climbs, sounds and feels — and the differences are bigger than most spec sheets let on. This is a full comparison of the six motor platforms we sell across our range: Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, DJI Avinox, TQ and Specialized's own in-house units. We're not going to tell you one is definitively "best" — each is tuned for a different priority, and the right one depends on whether you value outright torque, weight, quiet running, or UK dealer support most.
Bosch — The Default Choice for a Reason
Bosch Performance CX is the most widely used motor across our range and, more broadly, the most widely serviced eMTB motor in the UK — a genuinely safe default if you want strong torque and straightforward servicing wherever you ride. It's used across the Cube, Orbea and Trek ranges we stock, among others.
Bosch also makes lighter-duty units — Performance Line and Active Line Plus — used on some of our entry hardtails, trading outright torque for quieter running and lower weight. And Performance SX is Bosch's compact, lightweight-adjacent unit, built for a more natural ride feel without going fully into SL territory.
Shimano — Quiet, Light, Widely Supported
Shimano's EP8 and EP801 motors are quieter and generally lighter-feeling than a full-power Bosch unit, with a wide UK dealer network of their own. You'll find EP801 across several Trek Fuel EXe and Canyon models in our range. Shimano's EP801-RS is a lightweight variant, reducing weight and torque for an SL-style ride that still climbs competently — used on the Orbea Rise LT range.
Yamaha — Giant and Haibike's Long-Standing Platform
Yamaha's SyncDrive and PW-series motors are the platform Giant and Haibike have used and supported for years, across SyncDrive Sport, Pro and Pro2 tiers offering progressively more torque. It's a mature, well-proven system rather than a newer entrant, which counts for something if long-term reliability data matters to your decision.
DJI Avinox — The New Challenger
DJI's Avinox system, found on our Amflow range, is a newer platform with strong peak torque and smart features drawing on DJI's drone and camera-gimbal engineering background. It has a shorter UK service history than Bosch or Shimano, which is worth weighing if you prioritise a long-established dealer network over the newest tech — see our full Amflow PL Carbon review for more detail.
TQ and Specialized — The Lightweight Specialists
The TQ HPR50, used on Trek's Fuel EXe SL variants and Scott's Lumen eRide, is a compact, near-silent unit tuned for a ride close to an unassisted bike — the quietest motor we stock. Specialized builds its own units in-house: the S3 Full Power motor on the Turbo Levo range, tuned specifically for that frame rather than adapted to fit, and the lighter SL 1.1 motor on the Levo SL and Kenevo SL.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which eMTB motor has the most torque?
Full-power platforms like Bosch Performance CX, Shimano EP8/EP801 and DJI Avinox generally offer the strongest climbing torque, ahead of the lightweight SL-focused units like TQ HPR50 and Specialized SL 1.1.
Is a newer motor platform like DJI Avinox worth the risk?
It depends on your priorities — Avinox offers genuinely strong performance, but Bosch and Shimano have longer UK service track records if that matters more to you than having the newest system.
Do all our bikes let you compare motors before buying?
Yes — every product page lists the exact motor, and you can filter or ask us directly if you want bikes on a specific platform compared side by side.
